Bampfylde Moore Carew (b.1693- d.1759 & buried in St Mary's Church, Bickleigh) For over 100 years, his story competed with Aladdin and Robinson Crusoe for leading roles in pantomimes great and small.

Capt. John Gabriel Stedman (b.1744-d.1797 and buried in St Mary's Church) a distinguished British-Dutch soldier and noted author. His writings became an important tool in the early abolitionist cause.
