Rodney Vowler

Rodney's grandfather, John Henry Vowler, in the early 1900's was the village blacksmith, living at Church Green. His father Leslie Vowler worked in the smithy and also ran a smallholding on Glebe land before setting up a farrier business in Thorverton and later working as Farm Manager for Captain Carew of Warnicombe. Leslie's brother Leonard, Rod's uncle, was shot down over Germany right at the end of the second world war. After retiring from Police service, Rodney set about ensuring Leonard's role in the second world war would be recorded in his Bickleigh birth place. At the Remembrance Service 2021 a plaque to Leonard was dedicated in Bickleigh Church with close family members present. A very fitting tribute and achievement for Rodney who has recently passed away. We send our condolences to his family and friends.
