John Greenslade MBE

John, known to so many in our local commumity and throughout the South West, died in a tragic accident on his farm on Saturday September 19th 2020. He loved this part of the Exe Valley where he was born and farmed and enjoyed sharing his enthusiasm and love for nature and the importance of conservation to all he knew. On Radio Devon he was known as 'Farmer John' with popular stories of farming, topical countryside issues and family stories taken from old letters and other documents he meticulously kept. 10 years ago his book " 'Twas a Proper Job'  traced his family and farming history and is to be followed by a second book which he has recently completed.  Always a strong supporter of farming and the countryside, John was awarded an MBE, served on many Committees, including as Chairman of Bickleigh Gardening Club, was a Trustee of Charities and a Magistrate for many years.

John, with wife Jan, planned and established extensive woodland on hilly parts of the farm which has become a wonderful natural area for us all to experience and enjoy. Bluebell Walks and wildflower meadow strolls have become popular events and help raise funds for Childrens' Hospice South West. Talking recently with John about the glorious red juicy berries on the guelder rose bushes, I asked if I could try taking hardwood cuttings. A few days later he brought round a couple of stems he had dug up and even offered to plant them in my garden. Heather and I will treasure these as a memory of this remarkable and lovely man.

Sincere condolences to Jan, daughters Sally, Wendy and Julie, sister Margaret and their respective families.
